TNO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek-TNO) is one of the major research and technology organisations in Europe. With a staff of 2850 and an annual turnover of 530 million Euros, TNO is carrying out research in order to achieve impact on the following five domains: Industry; Healthy Living; Defence, Safety & Security; Energy; and Living Environment. TNO functions as an intermediary between basic research organisations and industry. By translating scientific knowledge into practical applications, TNO contributes to strengthening the innovation capacity of businesses and government. TNO is involved in many international projects, including EU-funded collaborations, be it research or service contracts, for the European Commission, the European Parliament or European agencies. Furthermore, our organization is a member of EARTO, the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations and as a member, the EARTO Secretariat will support the dissemination activities of this project by circulating project’s results and information on its website, social media groups and newsletter.


TNO leads the conceptual work regarding the risk based concept. TNO is leader of WP2 (Risk Based Border Crossings), will lead the task in WP1 with regards to developing the risk based concept, participates in WP5 in which the risk assessment methods are put into software which will be integrated in the overall TRESSPASS solution, including the definition of use cases and testing of the software. TNO will also participate in WP6 to support the work on operational level and in WP9 in order to deal with the ethical aspects of the concept. Together with the Royal Dutch Marechaussee (KMAR, Dutch Border Guard), TNO leads the pilot in the Netherlands.

Furthermore, TNO participates in WP1 (high level scenarios); WP3 and WP4 with technical input on detection systems, video analytics, and real time behaviour analysis; and WP7 with activities regarding evaluation. TNO will lead the work regarding the dissemination roadmap and will disseminate results regarding the risk based concept.
